Sealing Old Eviction Files
Many tenants with an eviction in their background struggle to find affordable, quality housing. Landlords often refuse to rent to anyone with an eviction filing on their record. These eviction cases are often years old and offer no insight to the quality of the tenant today. A recent amendment to the Eviction Act makes it easier to seal old eviction files.
Using this amendment, CVLS is starting a new, remote clinic to get as many stale eviction files sealed as possible. We need your help! Interested volunteers can email CVLS Attorney Matt Hulstein for a case: mhulstein@cvls.org. We’re hosting a training via Zoom on Thurs. Sept. 9 from 12:15 – 1:30. The training will be recorded for those who cannot make it.
These cases are a great volunteer opportunity! The work will entail one motion and a possible briefing schedule and oral argument. The time commitment is an average of 5-10 hours of work, over two months. In addition to training, CVLS will provide templates, knowledgeable supervision, technical support, and malpractice coverage. Volunteers with no prior eviction experience are welcome.
