CASL Client Finds Stability Post-Divorce

Samantha separated from her husband after having been in an abusive marriage for years. She and her husband have one young child together. When her spouse filed for divorce, Samantha didn’t know how to handle it alone. Thankfully, Samantha was able to access free legal representation through her local community via the CVLS Clinic through the Chinese American Service League (CASL).

At the clinic, Samantha met with Jenny Huang and Junru Chen who listened to Samantha’s story with patience and empathy. Jenny and Junru agreed to represent Samantha pro bono and help her through this difficult time in her life. In total, they spent 125 hours counseling their client, preparing paperwork, negotiating with the husband, and appearing in court.

The attorneys finalized her case after about a year of dedication and hard work. In the agreement, Samantha was awarded primary care and decision-making over their daughter as well as child support. Thanks to Jenny and Junru, Samantha can start this new chapter in her life with stability and financial support for her daughter. These matters are often difficult to place with volunteers because they can be stressful and emotional, so we are lucky to have these two!
