Beermann Clinic Expertly Handles Another Pro Bono Divorce

Going through a divorce is widely recognized as one of most emotionally stressful times in a person’s life. Hiring an attorney will make the process easier, but it is often difficult for low-income litigants to find a good, affordable attorney.

Maritza, the mother of a 12-year-old boy, sought to get divorced from her husband but was unable to hire an attorney of her own. When she came to CVLS, we referred Maritza to our Family Law Clinic, a partnership with Beermann LLP, one of Chicago’s premier divorce law firms. Law student Paris Silverman interviewed Maritza, and her case was placed with Beermann attorneys, Nadalie G. Ponce and Madeline J. Sefton.

Nadalie and Madeline filed Maritza’s petition and served the husband. The case became slightly more complex when Maritza’s husband hired his own attorney, but Nadalie and Madeline did not flinch. They kept calm, issued discovery, and worked hard to negotiate a settlement agreement.

A full agreement was reached with provisions for decision-making and child support for Maritza’s son. On her own, managing the divorce would have been difficult, but her pro bono attorneys kept everything manageable for Martiza. She can now move on the next chapter of her life.
