CVLS Hosts Asylum Clinic for Families Seeking Safety
Recently, CVLS hosted an in-person Asylum Clinic at its downtown office, offering legal screenings to approximately 30 undocumented immigrants seeking asylum. These individuals and families, predominantly from Mexico, Venezuela, and other South American countries, had fled violence and insecurity in their home countries in search of safety and stability.
The clinic brought together around 30 pro bono attorneys from various firms and 20 dedicated interpreters, including volunteers from Northwestern and United Airlines, who generously provided five interpreters. Before meeting with clients for their two-hour screenings, attorneys and interpreters attended a CLE training to prepare for the complex and sensitive nature of asylum cases.
Through these efforts, CVLS provided critical legal guidance to asylum seekers, helping them understand their options and take the first steps toward protection. While no future clinics have been scheduled yet, CVLS remains committed to continuing this vital work, ensuring that more families receive the legal support they desperately need.
