Client Sworn In at Wrigley Field
Flavia Cecilia De Leon Alvarado is originally from Guatemala. Years ago, volunteer attorney Renae Yoo helped Flavia obtain her green card. Flavia has been working hard ever since and is now fully supporting herself here in the United States. Flavia recently came back to CVLS ready to apply for U.S. citizenship. Renae, still a CVLS volunteer, was thrilled to help Flavia again.
Renae became friendly with Flavia’s family in the years since they first met. She has met all of Flavia’s children, siblings, and even some of her nieces and nephews. In fact, one of Flavia’s nephews volunteered at a few CVLS clinics as an interpreter!
One requirement for citizenship is passing an English language test. During her time in the United States, Flavia dedicated herself to learning the language in order to pass this test. When Renae called Flavia for the first time to make sure they could proceed with her citizenship case, Flavia caught Renae off-guard by speaking to her in English, without an interpreter, for the very first time. Renae could just sense the pride Flavia had in being able to communicate effectively in English.
On Thursday, August 8, 2024, Flavia was one of nearly 1,000 new U.S. citizens to be sworn in at a special ceremony at Wrigley Field. Renae was honored to get to know Flavia and her family. We are so proud of both Renae and Flavia for accomplishing this phenomenal outcome.
