The Life Cycle of a CVLS Intern

CVLS wouldn’t exist without its volunteers. Some stick around longer than others, but they all play a role in advancing our mission to provide equal access to justice. Some, like Katharine Pancewicz, start as interns and become part of the family.

Katie was a summer intern with CVLS in 2019 through the Public Interest Law Initiative (PILI). PILI provides funding for students looking to volunteer their time with legal aid organizations who otherwise wouldn’t be able to provide their interns with a salary. This program lets us develop relationships with people like Katie who continue to take volunteer cases even after they’ve passed the Illinois Bar and become licensed attorneys.

These days, Katie volunteers her time at the Old St. Mary’s clinic. She meets with clients like J., who need help with estate planning but can’t afford an attorney. Katie recently finalized J.’s will and powers of attorney for healthcare and property. Thanks to Katie, J. has his affairs in order and has been given valuable peace of mind.

If you would like to volunteer at CVLS or know a student who might be interested in an internship, please visit our website at www.cvls.org/volunteer.
