Dynamic Duo from DePaul Makes Big Impact!

Kristen Somerville and Veronika Filip are both rising third-year law students at DePaul University College of Law, who have spent their summers assisting CVLS clients with family law issues. We’d like to highlight some of their fantastic work over the last two months:

  • Cecilia came to CVLS for representation in a divorce matter. She had fled to the United States with her two daughters from Mexico because of her husband’s horrific domestic violence. Kristen met Cecilia and agreed to represent her in her divorce under a student law license. With CVLS supervision, Kristen drafted all necessary documents, prepared Cecilia for court, and elicited testimony during the final hearing. Cecilia is now divorced from her husband and has a judgment with findings that will help her minor daughter pursue legal immigration status.
  • Rosalyn married her husband in 2013, and they separated in 2018. Ready to move on, Rosalyn needed help filing for divorce because she could not locate her husband for service. Veronika represented Rosalyn under Supreme Court Rule 711, properly served her husband by publication, and just recently finalized her case. Rosalyn is happy to have this part of her life behind her and is eager for a fresh start.

Interns do a lot of heavy lifting at legal aid organizations, and CVLS is no exception. We are very thankful for the work put in this summer not only by our family law interns but all our legal and undergraduate interns. Enjoy the rest of the summer and stay in touch!
