Kathy Jara is no stranger to CVLS. Formerly a Public Interest Law Initiative (PILI) Fellow, Kathy continued to volunteer with us while working as a Corporate Associate with Sidley Austing. Kathy focuses her pro bono work with CVLS on Special Immigrant Juvenile Status (SIJS), which allows children to pursue immigration relief based on past abuse or neglect. Obtaining SIJS involves the issuance of a predicate order by a civil court followed by the filing of the immigration petition.
Thanks to Kathy’s zealous representation, impressing upon the Court the urgency of receiving the necessary predicate order, our client’s SIJS petition was submitted the day before Sara aged out of eligibility. CVLS recently received notice of approval of the client’s petition and granting of her SIJS status.
Because of Kathy’s advocacy, our client’s right to this lawful status was preserved, and she is now on her way to eventual permanent residence in the United States!
