Each year, law firm software company Smokeball recognizes the exceptional pro bono work of legal professionals with its prestigious Beacon Award. Potential winners are nominated by colleagues familiar with their work. In 2023, two CVLS volunteers were recognized by Smokeball.
Sandra Emerson of Emerson Law Firm, LLC was named an Honorable Mention. Through CVLS, Sandy and her firm has offered pro bono representation to homeowners facing foreclosure since 2011. Sandy let us know of her recognition by Smokeball and said the following, “I know that I speak for other volunteers in this group when I say that it has been an honor and privilege to volunteer for Chicago Volunteer Legal Services. CVLS does great work on behalf of homeowners in foreclosure, and I've learned a lot from the attorneys there that have made me a better lawyer.”
Smokeball’s Grand Prize went to another CVLS volunteer: Chlece Walker-Neal-Murray. On top of being the Executive Director of nonprofit Chicago Advocate Legal (GAL), Chlece works with CVLS by taking adoption cases and as a Child Representative in contested family law matters.
