Dulce lives at her home with her parents and her disabled adult brother. Along with her father, Dulce is one of the primary breadwinners for the family. Like many children of immigrants, Dulce is counted on to help her entire family make important decisions.

When her brother’s Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) application was up for renewal, Dulce knew that she had to help. Dulce’s brother is diagnosed with down syndrome and cannot make decision for himself. Dulce’s parents, who are undocumented, feared that taking guardianship of their son would result in detainment or deportation. A DACA recipient herself, Dulce knew how important it was to get this immigration relief for her brother.

Dulce asked CVLS for legal representation in the guardianship case in order to help her brother renew his DACA application.  Kirkland & Ellis LLP attorneys, Liza Miadzvedskaya, Aleschia Hyde, and Bruce Ratain all jumped in a concerted team effort to represent Dulce. With their help, Dulce was able to take guardianship of her brother. She is now able to help make important personal decisions for him and preserve his pathway to citizenship!
