LHOC is Here to Help!

Chicago’s Chinatown is one of many neighborhoods in the city feeling the harsh effects of COVID-19. In addition to the economic and health-related impacts of the virus felt by everyone, Asian American communities face unique challenges.

Eric Zhi from Kirkland & Ellis LLP and Erica Yang from Katten Muchin Rosenman LLP were looking for a way to specifically address the needs of the Chinatown community. They wondered if a clinic could be set up specifically to help clients with coronavirus-related legal issues. It would have to be held remotely to protect the health of volunteers and clients while also being easily accessible online and by phone.

With all of this in mind, the duo reached out to Kathy, Phil, and Meg at CVLS to pitch their idea. In less than a month, the Lawyers Helping Our Community (LHOC) Clinic was up and running!

The new LHOC clinic helps non-English speaking members of the community, including small business owners. It has over 50 volunteers – both attorneys and student translators – and clients are already accessing services online.
